Sunrise Earth is a nature documentary television series featuring hour-long episodes that aired in the United States on Discovery HD Theater, now renamed HD Theater. The series focuses on presenting the viewer with sunrises in various geographical locations throughout the world. It is also notable for its complete lack of human narration, concentrating instead on the natural sounds of each episodes' specific location. High-definition video images and Dolby 5.1 stereo surround sound are used to present each natural environment in a clear and detailed manner. The show is an example of the genre known as "Experiential TV", developed by series creator David Conover. The technique has been described by TV critic Tom Shales as "crazily uneventful and thoroughly wonderful." Compass Light, Conover's small production company in Camden, Maine, started producing the series in 2004. 64 one-hour Sunrise Earth shows have been created in the first four years of production. The crew shoots with High Definition video cameras and the editors cut between multiple perspectives at a leisurely pace. The show is presented in real-time, with each shot lasting an average of 30 seconds. Each episode captures one sunrise from a certain location, such as Machu Picchu, Turkey or Scandinavia. Captions in the lower portion of the frame occasionally give information as to the location, time, and events on screen.
Sunrise Semester was an American television series which aired on CBS from 1957 through 1982. It was produced in conjunction with New York University. During the months of June, July and August, the program was known as Summer Semester. The program was so named because it was broadcast at 6:00 or 6:30 a.m., depending on the area. Sunrise Semester was one of the first examples of distance learning, telecourses, or MOOCs. Lecturers presented NYU credit courses in studio on a wide range of academic subjects, and these broadcast courses were offered for credit to anyone who paid the course fees. The teachers were chosen from the NYU faculty, and included Neil Postman, who taught a course in 1976. The show ran on the CBS schedule for almost 25 years, but by the early 1980s, declining ratings, the rise of public television in the US, and CBS' desire to schedule more news-oriented programming in the morning hours, all led to the program's cancellation.
Sunrise Weather is an early morning weekend program airing on The Weather Channel. Its emphasis is on straightforward forecasts. The program airs for a half-hour on weekend mornings from 4:30-5 a.m. ET, and has the shortest runtime of any forecast program on the network. It is also the lowest viewed show on TWC since it is shown at a very early time and on a weekend. Sunrise Weather launched on September 20, 2008, replacing the first half hour of the now defunct Weekend Outlook. It places more emphasis on hard weather forecasts than most other TWC shows. When the show launched, Ray Stagich co-anchored with Mike Seidel on Saturdays and Alex Wallace on Sundays. In September 2009, Seidel left to cover College/NFL games for TWC, and was replaced by Jeff Morrow. In July 2012, Wallace left for First Outlook, and was replaced by Danielle Banks. In October 2012, Morrow left TWC. Banks and Stagich started anchoring both Saturday and Sunday together until November 2012, when Banks left for Weekend Now and Weather Center Live, and was not replaced. The show is currently hosted by meteorologists Ray Stagich solely on Saturdays and Sundays. If there is a major weather event, Sunrise Weather will be pre-empted by an extended edition of Weekend View.
